Yoho National Park

Yoho National Park lies just West of Banff National Park. I approached it on the Trans-Canada Highway, coming in from Silverton in British Columbia. The drive from Silverton through the northern portion of Yoho and on to Banff makes for a long day, but offers a scenic delight punctuated by a ride on the Revelstoke Ferry.

Yoho National Park has some extraordinary scenic sites, including the circular railroad tunnels, Emerald Lake, Lake O’Hara and Takakkaw Falls. Lake O’Hara can only be accessed by hiking for hours or taking an 11 kilometer bus ride. Visiting the lake requires a permit that must be applied for 90 days in advance,. Because of that inflexible arrangement, it was unfortunate that I arrived on a cool, rainy day. I was thoroughly frustrated that I couldn’t photograph this magnificent area on a clear day. On the other hand, conditions at Emerald Lake and Takakkaw Falls were ideal.

We download a small library of images to display on each of these gallery pages. That takes a number of seconds, but we think you will very much enjoy the result!

Natural Bridge

Soon after you take the exit ramp off the Trans-Canada Highway to go to Takkakkaw Falls, there is a parking lot offering easy access to the Natural Bridge.

The formation is composed of a jumble of immense boulders in the path of the Kicking Horse River. The roar of the falls is ear-splitting, so I muted these clips of the bridge, and of the river below it.. For a hint of the sound, play the clip of Takakkaw Falls.
