7 Color Canyon Near Halls Ferry
This mile-long canyon caught my eye as I drove to Halls Ferry. Ancient sea beds like this one had heavy sediment deposits rich in particular minerals in different epochs. The minerals left their tracks in the colors of the sandstone—red for iron, yellow for sulfur, blue-green for copper.
Eons of weathering and river erosion have exposed veins of mineral-rich sandstone, so the colors are splashed everywhere. This was my first flight of a full mile, and I apologize for the patchy clouds.
