Manti La Sal Mountain Loop
Fall 2011
The loop road allows access to the mountain range off Route 128 at the Castle Valley turnoff. On you left as you pass through this small town are a series of enormous sandstone formations, beginning with one known as The Castle.
If you follow the entire loop from the North, you will come out on the 191 South of Moab.
On the right as you pass the formations lies the bucolic agricultural community of Castle Valley.
As you wind upward into the mountains, deep groves of aspen, birch and fir trees are everywhere, punctuated by broad meadows of gorse. Jutting skyward above these scenes are the sometimes snow-covered peaks of the Manti-LaSal range.
If as I did you go in mid-October, you may run into some unstable weather—but the staggering quantity and color of the foliage makes up for it.
