The drive on the winding roads through the heavily-forested mountains is wonderful after the desert, At Buffalo Pass we pause to look down on the desert to the East. There, a powerful formation dominating the entire scene, is Ship Rock. The thing is colossal.
A dirt road off Indian Rt. 13 takes you right to the foot of the Rock, but without something to scale it, the viewer can’t tell how enormous it is. So, I did step into one shot.
By the way, I was out there for a couple of hours, and not another soul came to the formation.
The accessible portions of the Bisti Badlands consist mostly of the rather flattened black formations, rounded hills of the brick-red stone and two white sections with eerily-eroded forms in white limestone.
The black formations look for the most part like immense cow pies. Not much of a photographic subject. An area near the highway has quite a few red hills which are quite startling in the bright sunlight.
The most interesting areas were two distinct fields of white stone formations. The northern fields resembled marching armies of vaguely human shapes.
Then I went to the southern field. As I wandered through the formations, it was hard not to see some of the stones as creatures, so I captioned the pictures with my idea of what they suggested as I walked among them. You may see completely different characters…
